Waterford Harbor, Waterford, NY - 6/7/12

Quest and Carried Away left the anchorage at 8:50 a.m. bound for the 55 mile run to Waterford, NY.  Rickshaw and Moor $tuff are going to leave later on a rising tide for another anchorage a short distance up the river.

Raft breaking up

Rickshaw

Hudson River
Coming out of the creek into the Hudson we hit a very stiff current against us and had it the whole way to Waterford.

Hudson Light
The ride was very enjoyable with great scenery.Upstate NY is as pretty as anyplace we have been.

Typical Marker
Most river markers inthis part of the Hudson are on a base of rocks.  The charts remind us constantly to keep our distance from the base.  The same is true for all the river light houses as well.

One of Many Tows
The tows like to travel with the tidal flow and they really move fast.  We saw several of them today and kept our distance from them because of the wakes and undertow.

Navy Ship

Party Barge
We came through Albany in a light sprinkle of rain but it cleared off fast.  There was only one ship being loaded at the port with a product that created a cloud of dust.  The rest of the port looked empty.

Troy Waterfront
Troy waterfront was in need of repair.  The concrete wall was crumbling and the buildings along it were mostly empty.

Lock #1 - Troy, NY
We went under several bridges and rounded a corner to find the Troy Lock.  I called the lock master and found out that we had a 20 minute waited on a south bound lockage of a sailboat. We entered first since this was the first big lock that Carry Away had encountered and took our place on the lock wall.  This lock had a pipe attached to the wall that you loop a midship cleat rope to and it just follows the water as it raises.  This method will be found in a large percentage of the locks we encounter from this point through Canada.

Leaving Lock

Turn Right or Left?
Shortly after leaving the lock we turned left into the Erie Canal for just a few hundred feet to the Waterford Harbor Welcome Center dock.  This is a free dock if you us the wall without water or electric but it also has floating docks with water and electric for $10 per night.

The crooked line of stone on the walkway represents the Erie Canal. Carried Away & Quest can be seen right before the bridge.  This picture is looking back east toward the Hudson.

Nice
After arriving at 4:45 we celebrated the trip and lock with adult beverages on our sundeck with Bill & Joyce then made plans to meet (after showers) for dinner in town at 7 p.m.  An Irish Pub was the choice and the fish and chips were fantastic.

Touch of Home
This was a surprise!  We will be staying here until noon or so Sunday so Ricki & I will be attending Grace Church.

Grace Church

Looper Paradise
All loopers look for laundries when they get a chance and everyone loves ice cream. This place has BOTH!  If it only had a bar ......

Snow Marker
Do you think they have so much winter that they have to mark all the fire hydrants so they can be found in the snow?

Two Beauties
Back to the boats at 9 p.m. and pretty well worn out from the days activities.  This is such a charming town to visit and we hope to be able to look around some more before we leave. Tomorrow is "boat chore day" when I plan to eliminate the overboard pump out ability since that is a law in Vermont and Canada and we can be boarded to check it. It has to be totally non functional so I have a cap to place on the hose. The other chore is tearing the windlass apart which may be a bigger job than anticipated.

Our plans are now to continue up the Hudson River to the Champlain Canal, through Lake Champlain, into the Richelieu River and Canada, Canal de Chambly which ends at the St. Lawrence River.  We will go on to Montreal, Ottawa and the Rideau Canal that will end at Kingston, Ontario.  Hopefully we will be there by the end of the month so we can meet our daughters in the 1000 Islands.

Our position in Waterford is:  N 42  47.214  W 073  40.749

  2. Now you are approaching our neck of the woods. This is Paulette from the OYCM in Jacksonville. Lake Champlain is one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you had of taken the Erie Canal towards Buffalo you would have passed right by our place on Oneida Lake. We got our boat and sold the Sea Ray. I started a blog adventuresaboardthemorningstar.blogspot.com

One day soon we will be doing the loop and I love reading about your adventures. I wish I had of had more time to spend with you when you were in Jacksonville. Be Blessed my friend
