Ft. Edward Yacht Basin, Ft. Edward, NY - 6/11/12

Today we had to go under several LOW bridges so we had to get our boats down to under 17 feet to clear them.  Bill called the first lock at 7 a.m. that we would be going through within a couple miles and they indicated they could lower the pool so we could clear the 15 foot bridge right after the lock.  We pulled away from the dock at 8:40 and headed north.

Lock #3
The first of 4 locks today.

Lowest Bridge
There it is ... will we clear it?

Quest Made It
By lowering our davit and  anchor light we got down to 16 feet and so we had almost a foot of room overhead.

Carried Away
Carried Away had taken everything off their radar arch and lowered their bimini and cleared the bridge by only a couple inches.

Hudson River
Then we had a really nice ride for the next 29 miles.  The Hudson river bed is the beginning of the Champlain Canal until it reaches Ft. Edward.

Lock #5

Each lock has a sign indicating the distance to locks on either side of it.

Canal Tug
The canal tugs are not very high so they can clear all of the bridges.

Dredging Operation
At lock #5 we were given instructions regarding a dredging operation by GE a few miles ahead of us.  Several dredges were working along with many small tugs pushing the barges of soil around so we had to radio the Vessel Control boat for clearance and any other instructions before going through the work area.

Ft. Edward Yacht Basin
When we arrived at our destination we were helped by another boater in docking with the swift current.

Gilles & Nancy
Gilles & Nancy are from Quebec and have spent most of the year on a boat he made having traveled to Florida and the Bahamas before heading home.  They joined us for drinks and were truly amazing.

Their Boat
Their boat is made of steel and he did all of the fabrication and welding in his shop over 3 years. Many clever ideas are incorporated in the craft including a VW diesel with a dry stack and keel cooling.  They have traveled all year with their fuel costs being equal to 2 of our fillups.
