Leland Harbor, Leland, MI - 8/15/12

Another beautiful day ....

Charlevoix Harbor Light
With virtually no wind, Seaquel, Queen Kathleen and Quest lined up at the draw bridge for the 8:30 opening.

Beaver Island Ferry
Joining our flotilla was the Beaver Island Ferry.  It takes passengers to the island about 33 miles away each morning then returns to the island leaving Leland at 2:30 each afternoon.  This is the same boat we encountered at the bridge coming into the harbor yesterday.

Calm Lake Michigan
Finally ... a nice calm day on the lake.  This is the first time on the great lakes that we have had a really good ride for the 36 miles to Leland.

Michigan Sand Dunes
As we approached Leland we started seeing the famous Lake Michigan Sand dunes.

Leland Breakwater
Around noon we were in sight of the break wall  and called on the VHF for our slip assignment.  Seaquel was already in her slip since they had "cleaned the engines" a few miles out in the lake and stepped their speed up to 25 - 30 mph.  Queen Kathleen was running 1 1/2 miles behind us so we were in our slip when they stopped at the fuel dock.

Sleeping Bear Dune

Three Beauties
The ladies had spotted a beach next to the marina and almost as soon as they hit the dock were off to find it. The men each had their own agendas and mine was to clean what remained of the Chesapeake Smile off the hull.

Leland Harbor
The marina office is very new and very nice.  Not only is there a really nice laundry area and boaters lounge, it also has 8 individual shower rooms for those who need them.

Mike (Queen Kathleen) scouted the town while the ladies were at the beach and came back with a very nice and reasonable restaurant for dinner. We walked the couple blocks to it at 7 p.m. and passed part of the legendary Fishtown.  Apparently many years ago this was an active area for fishing and most of the "shanties" have been converted to either restaurants or store fronts.

Fishtown
Tomorrow there are sidewalk sales scheduled for the town however it is supposed to be pretty nasty with storms and wind so we will see if we venture into town or stay on the boat.

Looks like Saturday may be our next day to move on toward Manistee with an overnight at Frankfort but time will tell.
