Charlevoix Marina, Charlevoix, MI - 8/13/12

We woke up to what looked like a perfect day to move on down Lake Michigan.

Ferry in the Sling
As I was preparing the boat to leave we noticed this big guy getting hauled out of the water. This work yard was located directly behind our slip and is the same sling where we changed our props last Friday.

Mackinaw City Marina
We got all our cords and ropes aboard then left the marina at 8:45 with seas predicted to be 2 foot or less and calm winds.  Sounded perfect to us.

Mackinaw Bridge behind us
A couple miles later we passed under the bridge and headed west toward the first charted turn about 17 miles away.  The wind was on our bow and very light.

Grey Shoal Light
After we turned south the waves started building and we still had 35 miles to go.

Waves
Soon we encountered waves that were 3 to 4 footers but the ride still wasn't too bad since they were quartering on the bow.  I found that if we increased speed the ride improved so we picked it up to 1900 rpm and 11.5 mph. About 15 miles out it started raining and wind picked up a little more.  We have decided that neither Lake Michigan or Lake Huron is particularly fond of us.

Charlevoix Breakwater
Five miles from Charlevoix the rain stopped and the water really improved and was almost flat.

Canal
We entered the short canal to round lake which had beautiful aqua water.

Draw Bridge
At the end of the canal is a draw bridge that only opens every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour and we arrived here at 2:15 so we had to tread water for a few minutes.

Beaver Island Ferry
It actually opened a few minutes early so the ferry could come through.  This big boy didn't leave much room under the bridge for our little boat.

Marina Waterfront
Charlevoix Marina is very nice.  This is a very upscale town and the marina is just the beginning.

Marina Office
The office has a park around it that included the water spouts that usually had several kids playing in it.

Marina
When we got our slip assignment after getting a pump out, we were surprised to be right beside Marc's Ark who we hadn't seen for many days.  They had been to Beaver Island and came over today as well and experienced the same rough ride we had.

We plan to stay here another day to check out the town then move on to Leland on Wednesday which is supposed to be a good travel day.
