Zahnisers Yachting Center, Solomons, MD - 5/14/12

Since late afternoon showers were expected, Next Endeavor, Carried Away & Quest crews decided to leave early for the 63 mile run to Solomons, VA.  We pulled out of the marina at 7 a.m. and as were were negotiating the canal out into the Rappahannock River for the short run to the Bay, Carried Away radioed that they had lost their port engine with suspected fuel issues and would catch up with us later.

Fishing Boats
Several fishing boats were in the river along with a couple of small planes overhead.  Stan said that on the west coast they use airplanes to spot schools of fish so we thought this may be the case here.

Cargo Boats
The Bay was calm with a very light chop and we had a nice ride ahead.

Squatters
As were entered the Patuxent River the current and chop got worse and the auto pilot could not hold the course which did not last very long. As we passed the the markers we could see the nesting egrets and chicks.

Sail Boats
There are 13 marinas on the river within just a couple miles and sailboats seem to be the vehicle of choice here. We got to our marina shortly after 1 p.m.

Dinner
Bill & Joyce on Carried Away arrived an hour or so after us and we all decided to take the short walk into town.  Dinner was at Stoney's for a fantastic crab sandwich.

Next Endeavor, Quest & Carried Away
Back to the boats after dinner and said our goodbyes to Next Endeavor as they were going to leave Tuesday morning and try to get as far up the bay as possible.  They plan to catch up with Skip & Barb (Moor $tuff) on the C & D in a couple of days.  Tomorrow does not look very promising as far as weather is concerned so we will probably stay another day before heading for Annapolis for a couple days then on to Baltimore before reaching the C & D Canal.  Carried Away is leaving as well on Wednesday with a different set of places to visit.  We may catch up with both boats later.

Our position tonight is N 38  19.813  W 076  27.518
