Tangier Pics from 8/10/11

We are currently in Colonial Beach, VA just 60 miles south of DC and have a very strong wireless signal so I am able to load some of the pictures we took on Tangier Island earlier this week.

We left Doziers Regatta Marina for Tangier Island.

Entering the Rappahannock River heading for the bay.

Birds love these channel markers.

Crab boats at work.

Crossing the bay .... a very different story from the next day coming back.

Entering Tangier Island was similar to some of the Caribbean Islands we saw on the Windjammer a few years ago.

As we were docking little Will and his grandmother we gathering crabs from the pile posts.

Walking around the island we saw this boat being built.

Typical billboard.

The main street of town.

Inside the only grocery store in town. Supplies for the store come once every 6 days from the main land.

The restaurant where we had a great meal ... best on the loop to date. There were several restaurants on this island of 500 people only 3 miles long and 1 mile wide.

Favorite form of transportation. We were told there are less than 20 cars on the island.

Inside the Methodist Church. The other church on the island is non-denominational. As a result no alcohol is sold on the island.

History lesson.

Outside the Methodist Church.

The post office. They do get mail every day but no house delivery so they must pick up the mail at the post office.

The golf carts are parked on little ramps to protect them from tidal surges. Almost every house had these ramps so it must occur often. FEMA came in a couple years ago and raised most homes about 4 rows of cement blocks for the same reason.

A very neat bed and breakfast.

The school house. 80 students K thru 12 and 13 teachers. All the current teachers attended school here.

Our boats across the marsh on our golf cart tour.

This is a true fishing village.

A plaque to our marina owner.

A visitor as we were getting ready to leave. We started finding these critters in our strainers. Very gooey ...

A blue crab with his girl friend. Caught in the marina on a pole.
