Jekyll Island, GA - 6/16/11

Hello Georgia ....

We left Fernandina Beach Marina at 9:10 this morning after discussing the bad storms we had last night as well as potential storm problems today. Several boats in the marina either broke loose or were damaged as a result of the storm. The marina dock master helped us determine that we probably could beat any bad weather so we headed out.

The fishing fleet was leaving their docks as well.

Fernandina is just a few miles from the submarine base at St. Marys, GA. The waterway is tricky to follow thru this area so that you don't end up on Navy property. Part of the day was traveled on a falling tide which pushed us for awhile before hitting on the bow after crossing the sound at St. Marys. Right before coming into Jekyll Island we had to make a open water run across a sound that was open to the ocean and encountered very rough water. We are thinking about changing the name of our boat to Corky since it bounced around so much crossing this water.

After stopping at the fuel dock (143 gallons - $617) and a pump out we went to the face dock and watched the manatees swim by. We traveled 32 miles today.

Georgia and Florida are getting hit pretty hard with wild fires. Here you can see the smoke that is in the sky. Our trip today wasn't smokey at all but for the past few days the heat and smoke has been terrible.

Did I mention the 5 foot tides here?

The view south on the dock with Quest and Lucky One.

Jekyll Island Marina is not as interesting as one would think being on this island. There is a restaurant on site but only one person working here actually said the food was OK so we had hot dogs on Moor $tuff before turning in for the night.

Our location tonight - N 31 02.738 W 81 25.363
