Pirates Cove Marina, Pickensville, AL - 11/12/10

Today we left around 8:15 a.m. for the run to Pirates Cove Marina a short 28 miles. We were about 15 minutes behind 4 boats that left the marina earlier and when we got to the lock less than a mile away we were told it would be 45 minutes to an hour to turn the lock around because the other boats had gone in and didn't know we were coming. Another trawler joined us in our wait and when the gates finally opened the lockmaster indicated another boat was 15 minutes away and would we mind waiting. 45 minutes later the boat was coming toward the lock but was still 10 minutes away and for whatever reason, the lockmaster closed the doors and let us down. The trip was calm and peaceful with some water hyacinths (sp) and pretty homes along the way. Pirates Cove is pretty rustic and located less than a mile from Tom Bevill Lock. Some dredging was going on near the entrance to the marina and we actually bumped twice coming over the submerged pipe carrying the spoils to land however I don't think anything got damaged. We will know tomorrow when we head on down stream. Our friends on "Precious Time" drove their car down from Columbus Marina since they have to stay a few more days for job related issues, and we toured a snag boat and mansion that is nearby. While there some other loopers that had stopped a mile or so before us at a small launch ramp, joined us. They had to stop
early due to a tow boat rope that got tangled up
in one of the boats and they needed to dive under and cut it off. They had originally planned to go to Sumter and anchor out for the night. The mansion had some very life like exhibits with wild animals as you can see. Our looper friends had come to the mansion by dingy and when we returned to our boat there they were, ready for happy hour. The view of the woods behind us was as pretty as we have seen for a while. Tomorrow we will join 4 other boats at the lock and will probably have to anchor out before Demopolis since it is over 90 miles and 2 locks.
