We left Doziers Regatta Marina at 10:45 after getting my transmission fitting replaced and a full tank of fuel for Tangier Island, 28 miles to the east across the bay. The trip was very smooth and we ran on auto pilot all the way until the entry into the island which is very skinny. Our destination was Parks Marina and we were met by 80 year old Milton Parks who obviously likes to talk to the ladies. We arrived at 2 p.m. and took a little walk around the island. Without either cell service or air card service we were unable to send anything yesterday and am sending this from St. Marys, MD where we are at the Yachting Center. Our air card here will also not let us download any pictures so all the shots we took on this interesting island will be sent in a separate blog as soon as we get a good connection.
Tangier Island has 500 residents and only 5 or 6 different last names, however they tell us that they are not all related. Most of the men either crab or work on the tow boats since crabbing has become too regulated and expensive. The six of us (John and Barb, Skip and Barb, and Ricki and I) all went on a tour of the island in a golf cart (the main form of transportation) then to a restaurant where we had the best meal so far on this trip. Crab cakes to die for!!! The school here has 80 students and 13 teachers, kindergarten thru 12th grade. Our waitress at the restaurant told us she was in the top 10 of her senior class of 2 students.
Most loopers don't take the time for this side trip but it has been the most interesting place I have ever seen and I know you will enjoy the photos when I can get them down loaded. We took nearly 100 pictures but obviously can't put them all on the blog.
We will leave tomorrow for St. Marys, MD which is just off the Potomac River on our way to DC to meet Christine and her family on Sunday.
Our position in Tangier was: N 37 49.796 W 75 59.657
