Shame on me ... we have been so busy getting ready to leave the Keys that I hadn't taken time to update the blog, so here goes ...
Monday (2/28/11) - Many things to do in preparation to leave. Fill water tanks, haircut, banking, etc. We had used the helm as a storage area for unused fenders, pool floats, boat cleaning stuff and anything that wasn't being used and needed stashed, so all this stuff had to be rearranged. Neither of us is still fully recovered from the "bug" we have had for several days so our energy levels aren't very high. Ricki went to the pool for what might be her last trip and actually fell asleep on a lounge. When she woke up it was getting late and she was one of just a couple of people still there. Perhaps her sleeping (snoring) ran everyone else off!
Tuesday (3/1/11) - Thinking that we were going to leave tomorrow, I spent a large portion of the day cleaning the dinghy. The bottom had little white hard worm looking things all over it and I had to use soft scrub and a scratch pad to get it off. The airport is just a mile or so away and planes use our canal as an approach for landing and I think some of the stuff on the boat is a result of that activity. Of course some of the other stuff on the boats is from the numerous pelicans that fly around. The next task was hoisting it to the sundeck roof and covering it back up which took much longer than it should have taken. Ricki and Barb hit the Publix and stocked up on stuff for the Bahamas. Skip & I made our final (?) trip to West Marine for a few things.
Wednesday (3/2/11) - Winds were predicted to pick up for the next few days in the 20 - 30 mph range so nobody made a move to leave. It is still pretty warm in the high 70's low 80's so staying here isn't too bad but we are ready to go. This afternoon one of the AGLCA Harbor Hosts from Southport, NC gave a 3 1/2 hour discussion of the trip from here to Norfolk which was one of the best I have every heard. He actually went over the charts mile by mile with places to stay, places to anchor and things to see and do. That evening we had Skip & Barb and Ash & Patti from the boat next to us, over for dinner and great conversation. Ash & Patti are from the Virginia area along the Chesapeake and have been coming here for 9 years. Patti has a fantastic memory of things along the way and was also able to pass on valuable information.
Tomorrow we will probably do a few more things to get ready to leave, whenever that is. Apparently the slip we are in has been reserved by another boat starting Friday so if they show up we may have to leave and anchor out until we leave, but if the wind is still strong I don't think they can get here either.
