Marathon, FL - 2/1/11 (day 3)

To quote one our our guests .. "another day in paradise". We decided to take a trip to Key West on Tuesday. Since it is so busy during the winter and parking is at a premium, we decided to take the bus. Taking the bus is also cost effective at $4 per person (1/2 price for those of us seniors) full rate and takes about an hour to get there. We caught the bus just over a block from the marina.

The bus made several stops going down Highway 1 with the final stop on Duval street, the main street in Key West as far as activities. We just had to stop for an adult beverage and make our plans for the day and just "happened" to go into Sloppy Joe's, one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite watering spots.
As we were approaching the bar we heard the singer belting out "Almost West Virginia" and when we entered with Dianne wearing a WVU shirt, we were instant celebrities

This gal was pretty entertaining with her hula hoop routine. Apparently she is preparing to go for the world record of 88 hours of continuous "hooping". There was some discussion on stage of how she would handle body functions during that time and she indicated that she planned to stand in a kitty litter box and cover stuff up with her feet.

The plans for the day included a guided tour of the town which went by many houses and buildings.

The tour ended in Mallory Square which has to be one of the most entertaining spots in the state but it has changed so much since we were here over 18 years ago .... actually for the better. We remember it being a little more like New Orleans as far as being a little over the edge but now it seems more family oriented.

The Square is the stage for many acts that attract large crowds. This guy was a comedian and juggler that had a large Basset Hound as part of his act.

The dog didn't get too excited over the crowd as you can see.

The crowd started getting large about 6 p.m. in anticipation of the sunset but our hunger overtook the moment and we headed back up Duval street and made a dinner stop at The Hog's Breath Saloon.

Then back onto the street and toward our bus stop about 2 blocks away.

Our bus ride back to Marathon got us back to the boat a little after 10 p.m. just in time for a night cap and off to bed. Tomorrow we plan to go see the Turtle Hospital just down the highway from the marina and of course the mandatory stop at West Marine across the street from the hospital.
